5 out of 5 stars A wonderful HDTV & monitor   July 9, 2010
J. J. Eige (CA)
I am writing this review while using the Samsung P2370HD as a monitor. The resolution is great, even for small text. The connection from a MacbookPro is via its Mini DisplayPort, through an adapter, to the DVI port on the monitor. (Digital all the way.) Pixel edges are indistinguishable at normal viewing distance. I have not tried connecting through the analog ports, but would not expect that to be as crisp.

The TV connection is HDMI from a cable HDTV box. The picture is excellent, in HD or standard TV. The sound of the built-in speakers is even very good, at least to my old ears. I was prepared to connect external speakers, but find no need to do so. The sound may be aided by this TV's location on a hard surface close to a hard wall behind it, so that the sound from the down-facing speakers can reflect forward.

Even when turned off, the unit looks very good, with the clear edges and post, plus the subtle red highlights on the black parts.

I bought two of these units elsewhere before finding the Amazon listing, but the price was about the same -- very reasonable. Highly recommended!

5 out of 5 stars USED EXCLUSIVELY AS TV...........   May 24, 2010

Yeah that's right. I saw 1080p for $250 and jumped on it. I NEVER use this "monitor" as a monitor, so I cannot review that aspect of the P2370HD. There are only a handful of professional reviews on this product; the most notable being the awful CNET reviews and stupid youtube video showoffs and unboxings. Ignore that crap. Read on so you don't have to read 500 more customer reviews on google.

Lemme start out with a true analysis of what everyone says is good or bad about this Monitor/HDTV.

A lot of people complain about the sound. Well at first it does sound a little muffled, but just slightly. There is an option in the sound menu called HD surround. Even though I don't own an external speaker set, it makes the sound noticeably better for some reason. It also makes me feel like wealthy audiophiles who have an extra 600 dollars for Bose speakers were trying to find SOMETHING to complain about (plus usually in their reviews they talk about this TV a "kitchen TV!"). I love this TV's sound personally.

The next complaint that I hear from a LOT of people makes absolutely NO SENSE WHATSOEVER. "This product is more of a monitor than an HDTV." NONSENSE. This HDTV's picture is beautiful. I use this exclusively as an HDTV for my cable box and my PS3 via HDMI. With the PS3, blu-ray's and games look brilliant. Uncharted 2 ad Gran Turismo 5 Prologue look so stunningly beautiful that I sometime lose/die because I just want to observe the wonderful graphics. As for the cable box, it looks great as well. Especially cartoons. In HD cartoons look incredible. Some movies look better than others (all in HD but some look sub HD. It depends on the station. Trust me I know what NON HD looks like). But movies in blu-ray (PS3) are all just AWESOME. THe colors are better than any TV, Ive ever seen. The only bad side is that every time I want to switch from my PS3 to watch TV, I have to switch HDMI cables because there is only one port.

Only one complaint that I can agree with to some extent is this. "The viewing angles are extremely limited." Its true. I am lucky enough to have my bed positioned to the exact height and angle where I can be DIRECTLY in front of the screen rather than below, above, or off to the left, right. The TV does not pivot forward, so do not buy if you have a high shelf/stand intended for use with this HDTV. I'd recommend using a small computer desk (since most use this as a computer that goes without saying).

The point of my review was to convince all who are skeptical of this product to not be afraid to jump on such an opportunity. I have not had the dreaded "turn off and on by itself problem" either. IT IS A SMART PURCHASE IF YOU ARE GOING TO USE IT AS JUST AN HDTV, LIKE MYSELF. I saved 100 dollars by buying a superior, larger product, rather than sticking to the standard 22 inch 720p Samsung HDTVs that cost 350 dollars for some odd reason. I've waited half a year for this TV, and after reading COUNTLESS reviews over ad over and over, and thinking about buying the Samsung 2333HD or the T220hd, I just went for the best and came out with a major WIN.

BTW, this review is coming from a Sony PlayStation fan-boy who prefers quality in gaming and movies. I assure you that this does EVERYTHING that any other HDTV of it size can do, plus the computer option. The only downside is the viewing angles. BUY IT (unless you are buying the Samsung 2333HD which has an 10000:1 DMC with an annoying blue light in the front lol)(Or the T220hd which had an oddly shaped screen).

5 out of 5 stars Great TV and Monitor, if you have the right cables.   May 1, 2010

I bought this 1080p TV/Monitor 2 months ago, and it has performed extremely well.

I have a PS3, so i first used it to play games and watch TV Series.

Be careful to pick your cables when connecting this monitor. For example, the very first time i played on my PS3, things didn't look good at all. I was using an HDMI/HDMI cable. The colors were very bright, and the image was just so off.. but ridiculously off. I was shocked that it produced such a lame picture quality. I grabbed the instructions, and tried to calibrate it, thinking that maybe playing with it a bit would achieve a better picture... and i was never able to adjust it to something decent. I was even thinking of returning it.

BUT then i remembered i had an HDMI/DVI cable lying around somewhere. I hooked it up, and wow, what a difference. No longer did the image look super bright, nor did the colors appear off. Everything looked perfect. I have used that cable ever since. But that means that you need external speakers for the sound.. although i don't know if there's another cable that can help you produce the sound from the tv.

I also have a Macbook Pro and i'm using it with the Monitor right now as i type. I am using the same HDMI/DVI cable from my PS3. The first time i connected my Macbook to the monitor, the quality of the image didn't come out as nice as looking directly to my Macbook's screen, but then i discovered something out... i closed the laptop's lid, the image would "reset", and everything looked super crisp. With the lid open, the image would not fill the whole screen, and everything looked distorted, or blurry. I was so relieved to see the drastic change with the lid closed :)

So there you have it.. a little disappointed at first, but then it turned out perfect. Many people would have returned it within just 5 mins of use.

This TV/Monitor also has a lot of options for adjusting stuff.. every port has different options. For example, when i plug in my Macbook, and turn on the Settings with the Remote, i get "Modes" such as TEXT, INTERNET, ENTERTAINMENT, DYNAMIC CONTRAST.. when i plug in my PS3, i get stuff like MOVIE mode, etc.

Sound is OK i guess.. i almost never use the TV's sound, because i have external speakers. I used it once while i connected the monitor to watch normal TV.

I would recommend this TV/Monitor if you get the HDMI/DVI cable.

I found this product very cheap on amazon as a refurb, and it was a deal I could not pass up. I bought it, and have been nothing but impressed. I run two monitors on my computer, this Samsung, and an Acer 21" 1600x900. I use the samsung as my primary, and it's really nice because whenever I want to watch tv, I just move what i'm working on to my other monitor and watch cable tv through it. I love it. Very bright, excellent colors, looks classy, hd, what more could you ask for?
